The SGOT Test, also known as the Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase test or AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) test, is a blood test that helps assess the functioning of the liver and heart. SGOT is an enzyme found primarily in the liver, heart, muscles, kidneys, and brain, and its levels in the blood rise when any of these tissues are damaged.
Doctors commonly recommend this test to diagnose or monitor liver diseases like hepatitis, cirrhosis, or fatty liver, as well as to detect heart problems such as a recent heart attack. It is often conducted alongside the SGPT (ALT) test to get a clearer picture of liver health. Elevated SGOT levels usually indicate tissue damage, and the extent of the elevation can guide further diagnostic steps or treatment plans. This test is quick, simple, and involves drawing a small blood sample for analysis.
