What is PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)?
PEPTreatment in Delhi is a short-term treatment with antiretroviral medications to prevent HIV infection after a possible exposure to the virus. It is an emergency prevention measure,
When is PEP used?
PEP is recommended if:
- You had unprotected sex with someone who is HIV-positive or whose HIV status is unknown.
- You shared needles or syringes.
- You had a needlestick injury (common in healthcare settings).
- You experienced sexual assault.
Important:
PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) after exposure.
The sooner, the better—starting within a few hours gives the best protection.
How does PEP work?
PEP works by using antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) to stop HIV from multiplying and spreading in your body.
The goal is to give the body time to clear the virus before it establishes infection.
Is PEP a cure for HIV?
NO, PEP is NOT a cure.
- PEP prevents HIV infection before it becomes permanent.
- If you’re already HIV-positive (with an established infection), PEP will not cure or reverse it.
For people living with HIV, long-term Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is used to manage the virus, reduce viral load, and keep them healthy.
