Endodontic surgery is a specialized dental procedure used to treat infections or problems within the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth) and the surrounding tissues when non-surgical root canal therapy is not sufficient. The goal of endodontic surgery is to save the tooth, alleviate pain, and treat any infection or damage in the root area that could not be resolved with conventional root canal treatment.
Endodontic surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia, so the patient is awake but the area is numb.
Preparation: The area around the affected tooth is numbed using a local anesthetic, and the gum is cleaned and sterilized.
Incision: The dentist or endodontist makes a small incision in the gum tissue to access the bone and root tip.
Surgical Removal: The surgeon removes the infected or damaged tissue, such as the apex of the root or any abscesses, and cleans the area.
Sealing: After the root is cleaned, the root-end is sealed with a special material to prevent future infection.
Closing: The gum tissue is stitched back in place, and the area is allowed to heal.
Post-Procedure Care: The patient may be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and pain relievers to manage discomfort during recovery.
