Neotame is an is a non-caloric artificial sweetener, belonging to the world's sixth generation synthetic sweetener.. Neotame is the sweetest synthetic sweetener in the world. Its sweetness is 7,000 to 13,000 times that of ordinary sucrose. It is also the sweetener that tastes closest to sucrose. Neotame has excellent stability in the dry powder state. Under dry and appropriate storage conditions, it can be stored for at least 5 years without deterioration. Because neotame has no hygroscopicity and low energy, it is very suitable as a food sweetener. In 2002, neotame was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and allowed to be added to food. In October 2003, the Chinese Ministry of Health approved neotame as a sweetener for general use in various foods and beverages.
In US and EU, the acceptable daily intake (ADI) of neotame for humans is 0.3 and 2 mg per kg of bodyweight (mg/kg bw), respectively. NOAEL for humans is 200 mg/kg bw per day within EU.[3][1] Estimated possible daily intakes from foods are well below ADI levels. Ingested neotame can form phenylalanine, but in normal use of neotame, this is not significant to those with phenylketonuria. It also has no adverse effects in type 2 diabetics. It is not considered to be carcinogenic or mutagenic.
